Places Revisited

We were heading to Northern Waters today as Coltishall was our first stop of the day. We parked at the car park by The Rising Sun pub and took Hamish for a walk along the river bank. There are moorings to let here …

What a lovely setting! At the far end of the public moorings we found this delightful little family of swans …

and then we made our way back towards the pub …

Ever since this time last year when we hired a day boat and motored up to the head of navigation we had wanted to find it by road. With our trusty Ordnance Survey map at the ready we found the side road which led us to a little car park and we were reliably informed by a canoeist that we were in the right place! We were parked by the remains of Horstead Mill

and after just a short walk we found the lock gates we were looking for …

Looking back to the Mill …

A group of canoeists were coming down-river on a sponsored paddle and they had to lift their canoes out and carry them over to the next part of the river …

The chaps who’d confirmed we were in the right place were having fun in the white water …

We were now on the way to St Botolph Church at Westwick where I was hoping to find some graves of the Bowthorpe family. After a good look around the graveyard we had to accept defeat and were unlucky once again. It was a lovely church …

but as there was a religious group there on a special meeting I didn’t like to intrude and go inside! It is a long time since we’ve been to Wroxham Barns and so this was our destination for lunch …

I found it a little disappointing because it didn’t seem to have moved forward in the intervening years.

Three days ago we’d passed a car park which we wanted to go back to and do the walk to Salhouse Broad. This is yet another of our favourite spots for an overnight stay when on a boat. In fact it’s the place where Mike lost his watch – something I reminded him of when we arrived by the water! There were several boats at the moorings but I managed to find a few quiet areas for photos …

Looking back as we left the Broad …

and walking back along the path we passed this beautiful old tree …
