Sailing Holiday in 1954

Mike and his parents, Pam and Ben, enjoyed a holiday aboard the hire yacht Orinoco. The yard was at Stalham but he cannot recollect the name of it.

A memorable moment from the holiday was Mike falling in near St Benet’s Abbey. When he surfaced he was still wearing his bobble hat!

By the River at Reedham

We wanted to go somewhere but not too far away so chose a favourite stop of ours by the river at Reedham. Being Saturday I was a bit worried that the parking spaces would be full but we were lucky and managed to park at the swing-bridge end. While we enjoyed a coffee the activities began on the water with a yacht mooring up …

We had a yacht – Ariel – moored in front of us and the occupants appeared, took her cover off, had lunch and then made ready to leave their mooring. They motored away from the Staithe and then set sail and disappeared in the direction of Norwich …

In the space left vacant by Ariel we had a little family of ducks appear – so cute!

A yacht came downriver with its mast already lowered for the bridge …

A train went over the bridge …

and then the bridge was opened for some large private cruisers to go through …

Time was getting on now so after a cuppa and cake we said goodbye to the wildlife and made tracks for the campsite …

When we got back to our pitch we found that the site had filled quite dramatically and we had a lovely old-fashioned bell tent in front of us …

Whitlingham Country Park

After a very lazy day yesterday when the most exercise we had was a walk on the site by the river with Hamish, we got the map out and made plans to walk to Whitlingham Country Park today. So after breakfast with the sun shining we set off along the road. It was a very straightforward walk beginning by crossing the A146 then making for a roundabout where we turned right. We went over the railway line then over two river bridges …

We then reached Whitlingham Lane with this Trowse sign on the corner and a Wherrymans Way sign …

We soon reached the park and decided to follow the sign to the Visitor Centre …

On the way we passed Millionaires Row which I investigated …

The next thing I saw was a piece of sculpture which gave me the distances to Loddon, Beccles and Norwich …

While holding my camera to take a photo of the geese I suddenly had a companion on my finger!

and the greenery was alive with life …

The geese I was trying to photograph on the beach and some activity on the water …

We had now reached the Visitor Centre which also housed a cafe …

and sitting outside was a mum and babies – so cute!

We found a table and had very welcome coffee and cake …

Each table had a decoration under glass in the middle. A brilliant idea and so unusual …

A quick photo before we moved on …

and then it was back to the track which led us to the waterside. Here I found a notice about the Norfolk Wherry with a lovely poem on it …

and a pair of wherry sails as a sculpture …

Looking back we could see the buildings of Norwich in the distance …

We turned around and retraced our steps but went to have a look at the Outdoor Education Centre on the way …

Passing the Little Broad before we reached the road we saw some cygnets with their parents and a black swan …

As we crossed a river bridge I spotted a heron in the water …

Back on the main road we passed County Hall …

and a bicycle which was attached to a lampost by a bus stop on our way down was still there on the way back …

Obviously very trusting here in Norfolk! Hamish gave me a look as if to say ‘Are we nearly there yet?’

And it wasn’t long before we were back at the campsite.

Walk into Norwich

I’ve lost count of the number of times we have stayed on the outskirts of Norwich and we always say that we really must venture into the City. Well today it happened! We could have caught a bus but some neighbours on the campsite had said it was only about a half hour walk and so we thought we’d try it. We followed some printed instructions and found the Lakenham Way which would take us in …

After passing a huge Sainsbury’s and crossing the road we reached the remains of the old city wall …

We turned down St Stephens Street and soon arrived at the Castle …

With Hamish in tow we were unable to enter the Castle but we walked up to see it …

The circular glass pod in front of the castle is the top of the lift housing. There were many steps up and so the lift enables wheelchairs and prams etc to access it. We walked on under this arch …

and out onto the road. Past the Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum …

Crossing the road by this wonderful statue of an angel …

we made our way to Norwich Cathedral passing under this fantastic gateway …

I went into part of it but not into the main building …

Leaving the Cathedral behind we headed for Pulls Ferry …

where we found a Riverside Walk …

When we reached the bridge near the railway station we stopped at the Compleat Angler pub for a coffee. It began to rain but they thankfully let us sit inside with Hamish. Suitably refreshed we set off again to make our way back towards the Castle passing the Anglia television building …

Hamish was definitely slowing up by now – he was not impressed with all the people who were in his way by the shops! We soon reached the Lakenham Way again where I spotted this lovely notice illustrated by a pupil of the local school …

We were almost back at the site when it began to rain again and the last few yards were covered at great speed as the heavens opened. I’m so pleased we chose the morning to walk in and not left it until the afternoon!

When I took Hamish for his evening stroll to the river we saw a rainbow …

Bure Valley Railway & Queen of the Broads

After a quick top-up of food at Tesco we were soon on the road to Aylsham where the day’s adventures would begin. Having parked in the free car park (bonus!) I collected the tickets which we’d booked yesterday, made our packed lunch and then it was time to enter the station for our train …

The engine was on the turntable and then it was topped up with water before coupling up …

It was a lovely little carriage and Hamish and Mike made themselves comfortable …

We pulled out of the station and Hamish kept an eye on where we were going …

We crossed roads. passed fields and went through a few very small stations on our way to Wroxham …

Once we’d arrived we had a walk across town to the Broads Tours boatyard where we boarded the Queen of the Broads …

We left the basin and passed a plot which was being worked on so it will be interesting to see how much has been done when we return in October …

Then we went into Wroxham Broad where the wherry Solace was moored …

We went on downriver and before entering Salhouse Broad we could see a lovely private Broad full of water lilies …

In Salhouse there were some Great Crested Grebes nesting and also some coots …

On our way back to the boatyard we saw Neptune!

We’d had an hour and a half boat trip with a very interesting commentary and after leaving the boat we walked back along the river passing a boat called Mars which is quite likely to be hired by us all next spring …

Unfortunately there was nobody aboard so we couldn’t ask them what they thought of her! However they were above Wroxham bridge which was a good sign so if the tides are not too high next year we might actually get under ourselves and up to Coltishall.

We then made our way back to the station passing the signal box and the clock which was just a bit slow as we were here for the 4.40pm train!

We were on the last steam train of the day as the final train is pulled by a diesel engine. As we reached the passing place the diesel was making its way to Wroxham …

I spotted the river on the way back …

and Hamish became even more curious as to where we were!

Back at Aylsham I had a look at the engine …

We’d had a fab day, the weather had been very kind to us and and we would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who is staying in Norfolk.

Lazy Campsite Day

After the busy day with the boys we decided to have a lazy day at the campsite today. The weather was good so the awning and the laptop came out and I got blogging.

After lunch we took Hamish for a walk to the river which was looking particularly good at the moment …

I just love this photo of the reflections of the trees …

This afternoon I booked tickets for tomorrow on the Bure Valley Steam Railway where we’ll be going by train from Aylsham to Wroxham, then on a boat trip and finally back to Aylsham again by steam train. Can’t wait!!

Father’s Day Visitors

We arrived at the Norwich campsite yesterday afternoon just as the heavens opened and there was a torrential downpour. We were given pitch 35 in the lower field and had a lazy afternoon after the drive from Birmingham.

Today being Father’s Day we were expecting a visit from Jamie, Phill and Ozzie in the new car. Jamie’s car had been written off in a prang and so he’d found himself a Jimny convertible …

After Mike opened his cards and present …

we piled into the car and set off for a coffee at Ranworth Staithe. Jamie kept an eye on the boats that were mooring and had a good laugh when one of them got it wrong!

Then it was back to the car and a decision was made to venture to the Southern Waters as neither of them had been there before. We headed for Reedham Ferry and as it was lunchtime Phill popped into the Inn to see if it was dog-friendly. The answer was yes so we parked up and went in for a lovely Sunday roast …

After lunch we nipped up to the river to see the ferry crossing …

and then we got back into the car and drove onto it. The crossing is very quick but saves a long drive around and over a bridge.

With both map and ipad in use we worked our way down to Beccles and parked up to take the dogs for a walk along the river-bank. Unfortunately it began to drizzle but we kept going and came to the sailing club where Sunday racing for Enterprises was in progress …

Then we turned around and made our way back past the moored cruisers …Our next destination was the Locks Inn at Geldeston. This was somewhere I had seen a short film about on The Wherryman’s Web blog. It has quite a history.

After coffees we went for a stroll over bridges and also along the river …

Time was now getting on and the boys needed to get us back to the site. We’d had a lovely day and Mike was spoilt rotten! Many thanks boys and we love the car!

Goodbye Neptune!

It's another lovely sunny morning ...

and with the RV parked up right by Neptune it doesn't take very long to get the boat unloaded ...

While the chaps go to the office to get signed off and collect our refund on the fuel I take a wander to look for the webcam which is set up in the tree overlooking the yard ...

Mike and I also pop into the booking office and arrange to have Capri again in October - we're addicted to this place! Then it's time to move off and go to Ludham Bridge for breakfast. The people who ran the cafe we always used at Potter Heigham have now taken over the shop and cafe at the bridge. They greet us like old friends now and it's lovely to be able to take the dogs inside. When we came out there was a river cruiser on a trailer waiting to move into the yard opposite ...

and after a last look at the river ...

we said our farewells and headed off. One last look at the river at Wroxham ...

and we left the Broads behind us :-(

We stopped at Jamie and Phill's on the way so that we could see the kitchen and we popped up to a caravan shop to get a new lockable water cap as ours had mysteriously disappeared then it was back on the road again. We were making for Simon and Vikki's place at Ash Vale as the RV was to spend the weekend on their drive.

Neatishead to Stalham

Sunshine! The Scout group had canoed round from their overnight stop at Gay's Staithe and they left their craft tied up behind us while they went shopping ...

Hamish and this little chap were enjoying the morning sun ...

The Broads Authority were doing a load of work on the moorings here which would hopefully be finished soon as this is a popular place for visitors ...

We set off about 10am passing this odd sight ...

The top half of a boat had been sat on the grass, probably for the children to play in and on! As we passed the entrance to Gay's Staithe we could see the Scouts all lined up for their morning instructions ...

We only made the short trip round to Barton Turf ...

and while the others went for a wander around Cox's yard Hamish and I stayed onboard with himself on look-out duty while I read my book ...

It was a lovely quiet mooring so we stayed for coffee ...

When we left it turned cloudy as we made our way to Wayford Bridge passing the famous Hunsett Mill ...

and the monstrosity that has been built as an extension to the house next to it ...

We moored at the bridge and took the dogs for a walk round to the boatyard. You never know what boats might be for sale!!

Then it was back to Neptune via the farm shop and time for lunch ...

We needed to turn around and head back downriver so instead of using the engine the boys just pulled us round - much quieter and more civilised!

Sutton Staithe was the chosen spot for our last stop and once again the boys turned us around by ropes ...

We took the dogs for a stroll, had a cuppa and after watching a chap dredging the dyke ...

we left Sutton to make our way back to Richardson's yard at Stalham. Tony checked our fuel usage which meant it was one less job to do in the morning ...

and then after a wander around the yard looking for a different boat to hire next year we drove to the Wayford Bridge Hotel for a meal. It's a lovely dog-friendly place and the food was great - a fitting end to the holiday.

South Walsham to Neatishead

We woke to a very windy morning with a sun that was trying to break through. Mike and I took the dogs for a walk and were hoping to find somewhere to dispose of our rubbish. As much as we like South Walsham it is not the most 'user friendly' place as the toilets were locked here many years ago and there isn't usually anywhere for rubbish. Ever hopeful of a change of heart we set off and arrived at the moorings and slipway which were closed ...

The only bin was a small one in the car park and it was jammed full already! Not looking good again! So with our rubbish and the two dogs we made our way back to the boat passing this lovely house ...

and having a look at this poor yacht ...

I have a website that I check which gives names for boats where I just have numbers but unfortunately this yacht B898 is not listed so I have no idea what she's called or her history. Back at our moorings we get ready to move off ...

and after a spin around both the outer and inner broads we leave South Walsham and head for Ludham Bridge ...

We moored up and had coffee followed by a trip to the shop where the boys bought us a joint birthday present. It is contemporary wall art called Yacht Race and we love it ...

We'd decided to lunch at the How Hill moorings and as we motored up the river the sun came out! After mooring we walked up to Toad Hole cottage which was actually open!

We've visited so many times and it has been shut but today we managed to go in and have a good look around. It's free to enter and it is a cute little house which was originally used by a Marshman and his family. On the 1851 census it was occupied by the marshman, his three daughters, three sons, a grandson and a visiting child! It must have been quite a squash!! When we left the cottage we walked the dogs up to How Hill House ...

and looked back to the river where we could see Neptune moored ...

After lunch we moved on hoping to moor at Irstead and we were lucky ...

There were some goslings on the grass from an early hatching ...

We'd seen plenty of birds sitting on nests but virtually no young. Phill and I went for a look in the church and then while we all had a cuppa we watched the activity on the river as a Scout group were canoeing and sailing up to Barton Broad ...

Then this fabulous old cruiser the Dawn Star came past ...

She's been converted to electric and she just glided silently by. We left here and after crossing Barton Broad, passing herons ...

and a swan sitting on a nest ...

we arrived at Neatishead ...

Hamish was quite comfortable and wasn't too thrilled at being asked to move ...

but we walked into the village and had a drink at the White Horse Inn ...

Then it was a short walk back to Neptune ...

to find some more boats had arrived ...

Horning to South Walsham

We'd heard a little rain in the night and so it was a damp start to the day. I took Hamish for a walk and made my way up to the village sign which I've always wanted to photograph but when we're driving past there's nowhere to stop. The villages have such lovely signs around Broadland and this one is no exception ...

Then it was back to the boat passing the Swan Inn where relatives of mine had been in residence many, many years ago. I wonder if they lived in this part of the Inn?

We were heading back downnriver today and the first job was to go to a boatyard for a pump-out. We went to Ferry Marina and moored up but were told they couldn't do it and to try the small yard up the next dyke. So somewhat wary of a narrow dyke on a windy day and not knowing if we could turn at the end, Jamie took us up to Freedom Boats. The men onshore were great and helped to moor us and we got our pump-out plus a fill up of water. While the work was being done I asked if the owner was around as one of the locals I'd been chatting to at Ranworth was his wife. He appeared and he said his wife had mentioned me as I'd enquired about the webcam they were supposed to be setting up. We got talking about how this part of the Broads had looked in the 1980's when we visited with the boys and stayed in houseboats. He'd not seen it then and so I naturally said I had a blog with photos from back then! Before I knew it I was on their pc and finding the blog for him to see! I also mentioned that we used to hire yachts from Colin Facey and he told me that Colin's brother was the chap in a blue top doing our pump-out! Small world eh? After a couple of photos ...

they helped us get back out again and after a short stop at St Benet's Abbey for the dogs to stretch their legs we were on the move again and making for Potter Heigham. Mike decided to try out our shower while we were under way and all was going well until water was spotted seeping out from under the door! The yard had fitted a curtain for this year but unfortunately when pulled it hid the button that had to be pressed to make the drain function so Mike hadn't realised that it was filling up as he thought it was draining automatically. Panic!! I took over the wheel while Jamie helped his dad out of the shower and tried to turn it off. The cold tap refused to budge and needed a cloth for grip to make it turn. Meanwhile water was still flowing and had to be mopped up and all I could do was laugh at Mike standing there with his towel clutched in front of him but hardly covering anything!! It all got sorted but there was no way I was going to shower on the boat and so when we stopped at Potter I walked round to the ones at Herbert Woods yard. After lunch we set off again in the rain but we now had a handy window cleaner as the boat had no windscreen wipers ...
We moored at South Walsham for the night and the boys went for a walk. There was a nice sunset now that the rain had stopped ...

Ranworth to Horning

A beautiful sunny start to the day ...

and after turning the boat around so we could fill with water ...

we were ready to move off. Then when the roof was lowered Ozzie's food measuring plastic jug got blown into the water. Simon and Jamie worked together, managed to keep it afloat and hooked it up and back aboard ...

This was Simon and Vikki's last day on Neptune and so we made for Wroxham. As we approached Barnes Brinkcraft we rang Pam and she got on to their new webcam and saw us as we passed!

We were waving frantically at the large bluey/green building and other people must have wondered what on earth we were up to! We were soon moored in the Loynes/Faircraft basin ...

and then it was time to 'hit' Roys! After a top up of food it was back to the boat for lunch and then Simon and Vikki got a taxi to Barton Turf to pick up their car. In no time at all they were back, loaded up and we were saying our farewells. We pulled out of the basin about 2.30pm and went to Wroxham Broad Island ...

Jamie has recently changed jobs and he had to take a conference call so we needed somewhere with a good signal which is not always easy to find on the Broads! All of a sudden, as we were just leaving, there was a bit of excitement on the river as a River Inspector was approaching with lights flashing ...

He went to some day boats which as we passed by we noticed one was dangerously full of people with no life jackets on and he was having strong words with them ...

Jamie wanted to moor at Horning Staithe overnight but when we arrived there was no room for us so went to Perci's Island which is just across the river and we kept watch just in case a boat departed. I can't believe how lucky we were as a large boat moved away and Jamie had us over there in a flash!

We took the dogs for a walk hoping to find a dog-friendly pub but were out of luck and they are even banned from the village green ...

Horning is where the Southern Comfort is based ...

The boys ended up sitting outside the Swan Inn and having a drink although they were unable to get on to the free wi-fi as they'd hoped!

Ranworth to Salhouse

It's Mothering Sunday and for the first time in very many years I have both my boys with me today. As I appeared from our room I was presented with cards and gifts and a most wonderful breakfast spread was on the table ...

We had smoked salmon muffins followed by croissants and accompanied by Bucks Fizz and coffee! What a start to the day!The salt and pepper set and chocolate were my presents along with the cards.

I wandered over to the pub area to dispose of our rubbish and saw this little chap quite happily sitting for me to take his photo ...

We moved over so that we could fill up with water again and I had a chat with several locals so that it was mid-morning before we left Ranworth.

It was a beautiful day as we left the Broad and we passed several yachts who were out enjoying a Sunday sail ...

As we approached St Benedict's Church staithe we noticed it was vacant and so moored there for the first time ever.

This lovely stone was placed amongst the grass - it must have been a favourite place of someone's grandad ...

We decided to have a walk up to the church before coffee and we could hear the Sunday Service taking place. The church looked lovely with all the daffodils in flower ...

Then it was back to the boat making sure that the gate was closed!

and coffee-time ...

We moved off again ...

and headed for Horning where we were very lucky and managed to moor on the Staithe for lunch and a wander around ...

When we left we passed this building which was in the process of being built the last time we were here ...

Quite a transformation! We went into Wroxham and dropped the mudweight while we had a cuppa and watched the afternoon racing ...

Then it was off to our chosen spot for the night - Salhouse Broad ...

We closed the boat up, paid our mooring fees of £6 and set off for a walk. This is a private broad and so we have to pay to stay here but as most of the moorings are free we are always happy to pay and help with the upkeep of such a fabulous place. At the end of the track we found this sign ...

With one pub a 20 minute walk away and one only a 10 minute walk away where do you think we went? The Fur and Feather of course! Just before we reached it I saw this sign on the gate to the village hall ...

Brilliant - I loved it!

Not dog friendly inside but it was dry and not too cold so we all sat outside and enjoyed not only a drink but free wi-fi too!! On our way back I spotted this lovely cottage with an immaculate front garden ...

Unfortunately my photo doesn't really do it justice as it was perfect. Back on the track again and time to climb the tree which is hollow ready for a photo ...

We ended Mothering Sunday with a fantastic roast - what a treat on the boat ...

Thurne Dyke to Ranworth

Good morning! What a lovely start to the day to be greeted by this couple ...

After breks we said goodbye to Thurne ...

and made our way upriver to Potter Heigham where we immediately saw a Hunter yacht making its way through the bridge ...

We moored up and while the boys went off for showers Simon and Vikki went to look at the shops, waving as they passed over the bridge ...

After topping up with water we set off again downriver ...

and then up into Womack Water where everything was very spring-like ...

We moored at the Staithe for lunch ...

and once again the locals were trying to get in on the act ...

Hamish posed with the daffodils ...

and then it was time to leave ...

It was very busy on the river ...

The dogs were enjoying the view ...

and in no time at all we reached the River Bure and the sign for Ranworth ...

We decided to give the dogs a run at St Benet's Abbey on the way and there was plenty of room for mooring!

Ozzie has recently had an operation on his leg and this was the first time he was allowed to really have some exercise so he relished it ...

and then it was time to move on again. There were a couple of very sleepy people ...

but with Vikki at the helm we soon arrived at Ranworth where our captain Jamie moored us brilliantly between two boats while the whole of the Staithe watched and waited for him to make a mistake!

Simon and Vikki went off to climb the tower of Ranworth church and I tried to take a photo of them at the top but it's not brilliant ...

While the youngsters went off to the pub for the evening we sat on the boat and watched the sun set ...

Picking up Neptune

At 7.30am I received a message from Jamie to say that it was a bit nippy in Norfolk but to put the kettle on. Then I was asked which pitch we were on and I asked where they were. Acle was the reply and then a bit later on I was told they were shopping at Lathams in Potter Heigham. We waited and waited but no sign of them so I asked what was happening and was told ‘April Fool’!! I was not happy!! We took Hamish for a walk and then left the campsite and made for Stalham. After parking at the Staithe I popped into town and said hi to a friend who has a shop ‘Haven Healing’ and then found some new trainers before picking up a couple of bits in Tesco. We moved round to the boatyard and very soon the boys joined us. I forgave Jamie for his April Fool and we checked in at the office. Neptune was ready for us ...

and we were soon loaded, had the boat familiarisation talk and set off from Kingfisher Quay …

Phill was in his element in the galley unpacking things and sorting out …

We were soon arriving at Barton Turf where Simon and Vikki were waiting for us …

They were joining us for the weekend and so after lunch …

we set off across Barton Broad with Simon at the helm …

I tidied up our cabin while we travelled down the River Ant …

and then we moored at Ludham Bridge …

The boys wanted me to take another photo at the mill - see last year's blog …

and Simon and Mike fixed the flagstaff and flags …

With the screens down we shot the bridge …

and then Vikki had a go at steering …

We moored at Thurne Dyke and had a lovely sunset …

before wandering down to the Lion Inn for a meal.

Arrival at Ludham Bridge

Late last night we had visitors at the campsite as Jamie and Phill looked in to collect the tools needed for the kitchen. We had a sort out of who was buying what food for the boat and then as soon as they’d gone we crashed out for the night. This morning we were on the road for 10.30am and it was a simple drive back to the A1(M) and then up to the A505. We were now back on the route that we knew and after a top-up of fuel at Royston and lunch in a layby after Thetford, we arrived at Wroxham bridge …

and then very soon we were at the Broadlands Caravan Club site at Ludham Bridge …

While Mike had a nap as a reward for doing the driving I took Hamish for a walk along the river.

It was really warm and sunny although blowing a hooley! The river was deserted and the moorings at the Staithe were empty apart from a couple of boats which are permanents …

We shouldn’t have any problems stopping here tomorrow! We returned to the site and there was our motorhome on its pitch …

Last Morning on Capri

We were up at 7am this morning ...

We'd packed a lot of our stuff into the RV last night but we still had food to sort and the bed to strip. It was parked up next to us and so loading it didn't take too long ...

I took Hamish for a walk around the yard and it was very peaceful so early ...

There was smoke coming from a chimney on a narrow boat so there were obviously some live-aboards ...

At 8am the staff begin the task of checking everyone off their boats and our fuel was checked to see how much we'd used of our £100 deposit.

We had a refund of about £71 but £50 of it went straight back to them as we booked our holiday for next April on Broadland Neptune again with the boys! The usual pattern of events on the last morning is a drive to Potter Heigham and breakfast at the cafe by the river. This time we had to change our plans as the cafe had closed only a week ago and the owners relocated to Ludham Bridge where they'll be opening next spring. We drove over Wroxham Bridge ...

and went to Tesco for breakfast and a top-up of food for the weekend. Then it was back on the road and heading for Buckinghamshire for a couple of nights. On the way we passed the Imperial War Museum Duxford ...

and after stopping briefly at Luton for lunch we were soon arriving at the Caravan Club site of Wyatts Covert at Denham Green. We set ourselves up on a pitch but the television reception was terrible and we couldn't get the satellite system to work! I deperately wanted to watch Strictly and after much fiddling with the aerial we finally found BBC1 and BBC2 so I said there was no way that the RV was moving now until we left the site on Sunday!!

Ranworth to Stalham

Unfortunately it's our last day today. Somebody arrived in a dinghy to buy his morning milk and a yacht had tied up last night but it appears that no-one had slept on board ...

Hamish reminded us that we needed to fill up with water before leaving ...

and then it was time to go ...

As we approached Ludham bridge we could see that there was plenty of room for us as we only need 6ft 7in ...

There is a lot of work going on here and new moorings are being built ...

We were soon within sight of How Hill ...

and then in Irstead with this lovely house on the market ...

How much? Only £785,000!! After crossing Barton broad we moored at Gay's Staithe for lunch ...

and up to Barton Turf where it looked quite busy at the staithe ...

Salhouse to Ranworth

Hamish and I went for a walk and he made a new friend ...

It was soon time to move on and as always I was sorry to leave this peaceful place behind ...

So motoring back downriver towards Horning we saw swans take flight ...

and a large construction next to the Sailing Club ...

It will be interesting to see what it looks like next spring when we return. These yachts were not out on hire at the moment ...

and luckily there was plenty of room for us on the Staithe ...

Hamish was looking forward to a walk and so we set off on the loop which takes us up to the church ...

Back to Capri and the Southern Comfort came past on one of her trips ...

We had planned to move on to St Benet's Abbey for the night but it began to drizzle with rain and became quite windy so the decision was made to stay put here. We had a lazy afternoon and in the evening we had a meal at the pub which was very enjoyable and it was dog-friendly which was great.

Cockshoot Dyke to Salhouse Broad

No bright blue skies this morning just a glimpse of it amongst the clouds. A few locals came to see us hoping for breakfast and of course I gave them some!

We left Cockshoot and in no time at all had arrived at Ferry Marina as it was pump-out day ...

It's always recommended that you have a pump-out halfway through your week and it's a very straightforward procedure costing about £10. Off on our travels again and as we passed the Ferry Inn it was lovely to see it open for business again ...

We motored on to Wroxham as we needed a top-up of food from Roys but our usual mooring basin was full of cruisers and there was no room for even our little Capri. I'd spotted a gap on the Barnes Brinkcraft yard when we came up and so we headed back away from the town and luckily the space was still free ...

Our original plan had been to go under Wroxham bridge and moor there before going on to Coltishall for the night. However nothing was getting under any bridges this week as the rivers were high and so we'd abandoned the idea but still needed to moor somewhere to shop. I popped into Reception and asked if it was okay to stay for an hour and the girl on the desk said it was fine. With the cupboards and fridge re-stocked we left Wroxham behind passing a heron in a garden ...

and a lovely new boathouse ...

We went into Wroxham Broad just to have a look not stay ...

and around a yacht called Silver Arrow which we'd hired in 1974 ...

We had taken a group of boys for a week's sailing - Mike taught at a boarding school and ran the Naval Section of the CCF ...

We left the Broad and went outside to the free moorings for lunch. A wherry came past ...

and the Queen of the Broads ...

It was soon time to move on down to our chosen spot for the night - Salhouse Broad ...

Thurne Dyke to Cockshoot Dyke

Another beautiful morning!

Hamish and I went for a walk up the Weavers Way towards Potter Heigham and he was enjoying being off his lead ...

We turned around and made our way back to the windmill ...

After breakfast we went to the little shop at Thurne as last night we'd spotted a lovely painting for sale in the window. It is an original watercolour by Gill Smith of three river cruisers in full sail ...

We treated ourselves and bought it! Back to the boat and time to move on. We motored down the Thurne and turned up the Bure heading for South Walsham. Just for a change we had a trip around the Broad even going into the Inner Broad ...

It's so peaceful in here as few boats come this far ...

Then we returned past the waterside houses ...

and moored up for coffee ...

There's a nice walk alongside the river here so Hamish could have a run and we could watch the yachts sailing up to the Broad ...

We had a chat with this couple as they passed. Their yacht, the White Swan, was very new and had only been launched back in July this year - it was very big but they handled her so easily. After lunch we set off again back towards the Bure passing this heron which had just taken off ...

and spotting White Swan in the distance passing St Benet's Abbey ...

We popped into Ranworth Broad but just did a circuit and then left again as we were heading for Cockshoot Dyke for the night. We moored on the end so we could watch the boats on the main river ...

We weren't disappointed as a yacht and the Southern Comfort came past ...

After a cuppa we took Hamish for a walk along the boardwalk to the hide and sat for a while just watching the wildlife ...

Hamish is a dog who never forgets. He knows that we walk up to the hide one way and we return another way. However today this return route was taped off and he was not happy when he wasn't allowed along it ...

We returned to the dyke and began to walk towards the Ferry Inn but had to turn around when we found the water level was right up to and flooding the boardwalk ...

Hamish really wanted to go on as he'd spotted something ...

but we made our way back and settled down for the night.

Family Day on the River

We woke this morning to beautiful blue skies - a perfect day for a pootle on the river. Important things had to be done first so Hamish and I went for his morning walk and the water and bridge looked lovely ...

As we returned we passed the day-boats all moored up and waiting for the visitors to come along and hire them ...

I wonder which one will be ours for today? Capri looked very tiny moored up with all the big cruisers from Herbert Woods ...

The boys arrived and promptly began making toast for their breakfast! I'd been feeling fine but suddenly realised that I had a tummy upset and rushed off to the land loos! Thank goodness for Immodium!! There was no way I was going to miss the trip today. We set off for the Broads Tours building and after paying for six hours hire we were shown our boat. Jamie immediately took his usual Captain's place at the wheel and we ventured out on to the river and under the bridges ...

Mike and Hamish settled down ...

and the boys had one eye on the river and one on their mobiles!

There was a group of canoeists out today and we kept seeing them on our travels ...

We were making for Horsey Mill as our first stop but unfortunately we got behind a privately owned cruiser who decided that dead slow was the speed to go! There was no way we could overtake them on the narrow river and with time ticking away we were very pleased when we reached Horsey Mere and could move along at a more respectable pace ...

We moored in the dyke ...

and then went for a stroll to look at the Mill ...

Having been delayed in getting here we decided to move on as we wanted to reach Hickling for lunch. A couple of black swans came to see us ...

and in no time at all we were on Hickling Broad with Sunday racing going on all around us ...

We wanted to moor near the end of the Pleasure Boat Inn staithe so we could watch the antics on the water but there was only one post handy. There was however a bunch of reeds which were duly used as a very effective mooring stake!

The dinghies began to return to the club for their lunch-break ...

We ate our picnic and had a wander around the boatyard before returning to find this fantastic yacht had moored up ...

The sailors began to prepare for afternoon racing ...

and then we set off amongst them again ...

Hamish was looking totally bored by us all watching the boats and settled down ...

We were soon on calmer water again ...

and in the distance we could see the offshore windfarm ...

Everyone was enjoying the beautiful weather ...

We passed this lovely yacht ...

and then turned up the Thurne heading for West Somerton ...

Last year when we had Crown Gem we came quite a long way up but were not too sure how wide it would be or if there was a turning place. It was nice to be in a little boat and know that we'd be okay but as it turned out we could have managed it last year as well ...

We were getting a bit worried now that we'd be back late so passing a flock of coots on Martham Broad ...

and Martham ferry ...

we arrived at the yard with ten minutes to spare! What a fabulous day and the Immodium worked! We said goodbye to the boys and set off in Capri hoping to find a mooring at Thurne dyke. I'd thought they might be waving from the bridge but there was no sign of them ...

I was totally amazed when there was a shout from the shore as we were moving downriver and there they were waving and taking photos of us ...

We arrived at the dyke to find a lovely spot right near the end by the windmill which is perfect for capturing sunsets ...

St Benet's Abbey to Potter Heigham

The moorings at the Abbey are perfect for dogs and Hamish knew exactly where he was and that he would be going for a run!

I walked back via the river as there were a number of swans waiting to be photographed …

We were heading for the Ferry Inn at Stokesby for lunch and Mike rang to book a mooring as we’d done a couple of years ago. Unfortunately they no longer take bookings and we had to take pot luck. We passed a few yachts both traditional and more modern …

and were very lucky as there was a space right outside the pub …

I just loved this statue which was outside the door …

I couldn’t agree more!! We had a lovely meal and then it was back to the boat and off to Potter Heigham. We went up to Womack Water passing the Hunter yard where all their yachts were ready for a winter lay-up …

and we saw Bure Classic on her way back to Colin Buttifant’s yard …

After a quick stop to fill with water we were soon on our way again hoping to find a mooring on the river near the bridge. As we approached it soon became obvious that they were all taken so we went into Herbert Woods yard and stopped there. Mike rang the Pilot to see if there was a chance of getting under the bridge in the morning at low tide but he said nothing was getting through unless it was a day-boat! We’d arranged with Jamie and Phill to meet up and take them above the bridge so when they arrived we decided that we’d hire a day-boat in the morning, take a picnic and spend the day visiting Hickling and Horsey. They were booked into a Travelodge at Acle and were off into Norwich for the evening. I tried out the shower on the boat and it was fantastic! It is definitely the best one that we’ve ever had …

Capri Day!

We were up and off fairly promptly this morning as today is Capri day! After a stop at Tesco to stock up with food for a few days we made our way up to Stalham and Richardsons boatyard. Mike went to the office to check in and we were told that the boat was ready for us after we’d been told how everything worked.

She’d had a refit last year and was very smart inside …

We loaded all our stuff, parked the RV in a shed and moved off from the yard …

Hamish made himself comfortable …

and I had a go at driving …

I’m looking petrified but I did get better and more relaxed as the week progressed! We had the river to ourselves …

and in no time at all we had arrived at the St Benet’s Abbey moorings …

Mike got the flags out and fixed them to the roof …

We’ve belonged to the Broads Society since the early 1970’s and joined the Norfolk and Suffolk Boating Association more recently. A cruiser had obviously broken down as they were getting a tow upriver by Boulter Marine …

Reedham

It was a lovely morning and Mike gave the RV a bit of a clean after the drive in the bad weather yesterday …

We didn’t have much planned for today, just a drive over to Reedham where we can park by the river and watch the boats go by. We went for a stroll and I noticed that the railway bridge was open …

We came back passing the Lord Nelson …

and it wasn’t too long before we saw the bridge closing for a train …

It was then time to return to the site crossing over the River Yare on the way …

Sandringham to Norwich via Horning

It was moving on day today as we were leaving Sandringham behind and making for the Norwich site that we always use. The weather was pretty awful as the rain hammered down and we also got stuck in roadworks to add to the problem. We decided to call at Horning on the way as I had a printout from the 1911 census for a family of relatives who lived and worked there. We parked in the car park which overlooked the river where the Southern Comfort was just leaving for a trip …

and then went for a walk through the village. I went into the Post Office to ask if the name of the house meant anything as I’d been unable to find it on the internet and the Postmaster said he didn’t know of it. I knew that a family of Southgates lived in a pretty cottage …

and he told me that the 95 year old owner had recently died but that the house had been purchased by his father and it was then three cottages which he had made into one. I thanked him for his help and when we began to think about names we suddenly realised that this was most probably the place I was looking for. The cottage is now called The Brambles and I was looking for Briar Cottage! Result! When back by the river I had a look for the webcam on Horning Sailing Club. This is a website that I regularly check on to get my fix of the Broads when I’m in Cornwall! You can spot the webcam just above the word ‘Club’ …

It was very quiet on the river today …

We then made tracks for the site and set ourselves up for a couple of nights.

Burnham Overy Staithe

It was thankfully dry this morning and we were off to visit Old Hunstanton where there was an Arts and Crafts centre. We had a lovely wander round but didn’t find anything we wanted to buy. From here we drove to Brancaster Staithe as we were positive that this was the place we’d parked on shingle several years ago. As we passed through the village nothing looked familiar and so we drove on to Burnham Overy Staithe. There was a short one-way road which we drove down and there before us was the shingle we remembered! After lunch I had a stroll around taking photos …

The tide wasn’t due in until late afternoon …

It was then back to the site and in the evening we had a lovely sunset …

Cromer for Crab!

After a wash-out day yesterday when all we did was visit Tesco and have a walk in the rain we were hoping for better weather today. No joy! More rain and fog to accompany it! We decided to ignore it and go to Cromer as Mike was desperate to get some crab for a sandwich and I was hoping to do some grave hunting for Combens who had been lighthouse keepers at Cromer. We parked up and walked down to the church in the centre of the town.

I had a good look around but no sign of any Combens. We had a look at the pier ...

and then found a fish shop for the crab. Back to the RV to dry off and make lunch ...

We then drove to Overstrand to search the church there but once again no luck. A pretty church and as the lighthouse is at Overstrand it is the most likely place that they are buried ...

Castle Rising

We’re not technically in Broadland but we are in Norfolk so I’m including our stay at Sandringham on the Broadland blog.

After a lazy start to the day we set off from the campsite to find English Heritage’s Castle Rising Castle. This was the seat of the Howard Family and is one of the largest keeps in the country. As we approached we could see the depth of the moat …

and after paying our entry fee we crossed and went under the gates …

The keep was then in front of us in all its glory …

We entered the building and took note of the warnings …

up the steps …

and turned left …

Through into the basement …

Here there was the well …

and then we went up the stairs in the corner …

We entered this doorway …

to find these lovely tiles …

This is looking through into the kitchen and Mike bashed his head on the way out!

The Great Hall was on the upper level here with the basement below …

We then walked around on the top of the moat …

and after walking down the steps we could walk around the grass visiting the early Norman church built in the late 11th century …

At the side of the keep are the remains of the lodgings …

and a 14th century chapel …

It was then time to go back to the RV for lunch and after a drive through the village of Wolferton we returned to the campsite to sit out and enjoy a cuppa in the sunshine …

Goodbye Neptune

We were awake and up early this morning as hand-over starts from about 8am. We'd got the vehicles out of storage last night and had begun off-loading our stuff then. I'm always amazed at how much we take with us on the boat and most of it never sees the light of day! It was a beautiful day again ...

and after the chaps had checked the fuel we'd used and we'd returned the lifejackets then it was time to leave the yard.

It is now a tradition that we have our last breakfast at the Tearooms at Potter Heigham ...

It's dog-friendly and it's just a nice way to end the holiday. After we'd eaten Mike, Phill and I went to Lathams and Jamie took Ozzie for a walk around Herbert Woods' yard. A boat had arrived on a trailer and so he went to investigate while we did our shopping. When we got back Jamie was chatting to one of the new owners and it turned out that they'd found it on the internet and had bought it from Chertsey. A small world - that is where Jamie was born! Anyway it was called Hasty Lady and was a Freeman 32.

We all then got chatting and I mentioned my blog on Crocus and the lady said that her husband used to build wooden boats in Norfolk and she would have a look at my blog. I tried to convince her to set up a blog for Hasty Lady as they needed some work done on her and then planned to take her to the Continent and travel down through the canals. Perfect for blogging! We watched her launched (the boat that is!) and then said our farewells. Although we were going back to Luton to stay with the boys until Monday we didn't want to drive in convoy and so they left before us. We drove through Ludham and made for Wroxham where we got caught at the traffic lights outside Roys ...

One final time over Wroxham bridge ...

and then it was off to Luton.

Thurne Dyke to Stalham

It's our last full day on the water and very soon after breks we leave our moorings ...

and move off down the Thurne and back towards the Ant. We moor just below Ludham Bridge as the boys need some dog food for Ozzie and you can never guarantee a mooring on the far side.

As they go off shopping Ozzie watches them as if they've abandoned him and are never coming back!

The boat owned by the Nancy Oldfield Trust passes us ...

The Trust offers disabled as well as social disadvantaged people the chance to experience the Broads and they do a great job. It's then back on board and with the windscreen lowered we negotiate the bridge ...

which has plenty of room for us today ...

Hamish just checks to see where we are ...

and in no time we're approaching How Hill ...

It's very quet on the river today and a swan comes gliding towards us ...

We're now almost at Irstead and the plan was to moor at the Staithe if there was a space. Once again we're lucky and so we stop for coffee ...

Mike and I go for a look around the church ...

The door is said to be very, very old ...

These steps didn't seem to go anywhere!

It is a church with a thatch and this is how it looks from inside ...

Moving on we reach Barton Broad where a heron is perched on the 4mph sign ...

We turn up towards Gay's Staithe but this time we go further and are aiming for the moorings at Neatishead. We have the river to ourselves ...

It's very narrow here but Jamie manages to moor us at the Staithe ...

Another boat approaches ...

and Mike has a look to see how big the turning area is beyond the moorings as this is the end of navigation ...

After lunch and a lazy hour or two we set off on the last part of our journey ...

About an hour later we were back at Richardsons yard ...

and moored up for our last night at Swan Quay ...

We took the dogs and had a good wander around the boats looking for something different for next year but finally decided that Neptune despite a few things going against her (like the fridge defrosting overnight a couple of times!) was probably the best layout we could get for the price. So if Crocus is not on the water by next Spring (which is highly unlikely) we'll be back here to pick up Broadland Neptune for another week's holiday.

Ranworth to Thurne Dyke

There was quite a bit of activity this morning as boats left their overnight moorings and new ones arrived. One of the first to come in was our old friend Zoe ...

and it didn't take Mike long before he was giving her the once over ...

Ranworth church is just visible from the Staithe ...

After a wander around the shop and the purchase of a few presents we were saying goodbye to Ranworth and making for St Benet's Abbey moorings as a good coffee spot ...

Hamish was immediately asking if we were taking him for a run ...

After our walk it was back to the boat for coffee and we watched as Zoe passed by under full sail ...

We motored on downriver heading for Acle bridge as the chosen lunch stop for today. I can't take the praise for this photo as Jamie or Phill took it but I just had to include it on my blog ...

There was quite a bit of work going on repairing moorings ...

and then we reached the measured 1/4 mile ...

Jamie was at the helm and we timed ourselves and worked out that we were doing exactly the right speed ie 5mph. Apart from the work on the banks there was also some dredging work. The river was being dredged in one place and then a full barge moved up to where the crane was empyting it out over the land ...

Phill took a turn at the helm ...

We moored at Acle bridge, had lunch and shopped in the little Bridge Stores and then set off once again. We wanted to stop the night at Thurne Dyke and have a meal at the Lion Inn as it's dog-friendly. When we arrived we had plenty of choice and so moored right by the mill ...

Salhouse Broad to Ranworth

Another beautiful morning!

I took Hamish for a run up the hill before breks ...

and then he decided to be in charge of the boat this morning!

We had a visit from one of the ducks we'd been feeding ...

Jamie filled the boat up with water before we left the mooring ...

Then it was all aboard ...

and off we went ...

We began by having a look at the end of the Broad ...

and then made our way back to Horning ...

We managed to moor once again at the Staithe ...

and had coffee outside at the Staithe 'N' Willow ...

When we returned to Neptune we suddenly noticed a mum and babes making their way to the water for the first time ...

They all plopped in and swam off together - aah!!

Time to go again and as we motored downriver we saw some thatchers hard at work ...

with a finished roof next door ...

We were looking for a boatyard where we could get a pump-out and as we approached Ferry Marina we spotted what we required and Jamie soon had us moored up and waiting for someone to do the deed!

The pump-out was soon completed ...

and we moved on once more heading for St Benet's Abbey so the dogs could have a run. I have photographed here so many times that it's difficult to find another angle!

From here we went to Ranworth where with fingers crossed we were hoping to get a mooring for the night. We were lucky!

Cockshoot Dyke to Salhouse Broad

What a beautiful morning! We were greeted by this heron which was standing just in front of our boat …

After breks we set off for Horning passing lovely properties on the way …

In no time at all we reached the Norfolk Broads Yachting Company’s yard where many of their yachts were moored on the opposite bank to the sheds …

We were hoping to moor at the Staithe but it is always popular and you need to be very lucky to find a space. Just as we arrived a boat was leaving and with perfect timing for us today, we took its place …

We locked the boat up and went for a walk through Horning starting at the car park where we could dispose of our rubbish. The Southern Comfort was on her mooring by the Swan Inn …

We went along the road by the Inn and wandered in and out of a few of the little shops. The Post Office looks a very old building …

We had a quick look into the NBYC shed …

And then it was back to the boat for a coffee. Time to move on again so passing the Swan Inn …

and on upriver we went. The property here is just to die for …

and one for sale but way out of our league …

Leaving Horning behind we passed this grebe on her nest with hubby keeping an eye out for trouble …

We were hoping to moor at Wroxham so we could top up the fridge and larder by shopping at Roys and although the basin was very full Jamie managed to find a spot in the corner next to the Broads Tours boat …

With Neptune locked up again we set off for the shops stopping on the bridge to ring Pam and wave at her as she tried to see us on the webcam …

The boys went off to Roys and Mike and I set off in search of Royalls Boatyard. They have a lovely blog which I follow and I wanted to stop by and say hello.

Unfortunately the office, although the sign said Open, was locked up and there was absolutely no-one about. Mike popped his head in the workshop and called out and I had a wander about looking for some sign of life by the boats – no-one. It will have to wait until our next visit to Norfolk. We met up with the boys at Roys then it was time to return to the boat and move off …

We left Wroxham …

and with the Queen of the Broads waiting to enter the basin …

we set off back downriver. A new boatshed was being built …

Just past the entrance to Wroxham Broad there are some moorings on Wroxham Broad Island which were perfect for a lunch stop …

We were spending the night at Salhouse Broad which was just a short hop down the Bure and when we arrived it was deserted …

We moored up stern-on as requested and in no time at all we were visited by swans and ducks …

The boys took the dogs for a walk and when they returned they told me about a family of Egyptian Geese which were at the other mooring spot. With camera in hand I set off to find them …

I love Salhouse Broad – it’s so picturesque …

Later on the little family came up to find us and I got the corn out to feed them …

It was a beautiful evening as the sun went down …

Potter Heigham to Cockshoot Dyke

We began the day with Jamie cooking what is known in our family as ‘boat breakfast’ …

How he managed in the tiny galley I don’t know but it was all very yummy. Once Lathams were open all the males onboard went shopping! Yes I said the males – I stayed with the dogs!! I did go to the bridge and photograph how much room there was underneath it …

We probably could have got through if we’d wanted but it wasn’t on the itinerary. We left our moorings and went back downriver passing this heron …

and a yacht which was lowering its topsail …

We turned up the River Bure heading for Ranworth and saw this river cruiser under power …

and then one under sail …

and the Broads Authority on duty at the moorings by St Benet’s Abbey …

We had a look in at Ranworth but all the moorings were taken so we turned around and made our way out of the Broad heading for South Walsham instead. We moored for lunch and then Jamie took his favourite timed shot …

We left the mooring and motored on down to the Broad …

turned around and came back out again. We met the Southern Comfort on our way up the dyke …

We were making for Ludham Bridge as we had to drop Simon back to pick up his car. He took us upriver and under the bridge …

We moored up and said our farewells watching him drive over the bridge on his way home …

We had decided to try and get to Cockshoot Dyke for the night and so it was back under the bridge for us …

I spotted my namesake moored up …

and this lovely family of geese …

We arrived at Cockshoot Dyke and there was plenty of room so we moored up and took the dogs for a walk to the Broad where there is a hide. It’s lovely and peaceful here and so beautiful …

After sitting and watching for a while we walked back to the river ...

Then we walked on the boardwalk alongside the River Bure towards the Ferry Inn which is still closed …

Then it was back to the boat with Hamish leading the way …

A duck with her five duckings came to see us …

and then another duck with thirteen ducklings although I never managed to get all of them in a photo together …

We had a couple of very cheeky ones who came on board for food …

Ludham Bridge to Potter Heigham

We woke to a lovely sunny morning and Hamish was soon out on duty …

and posing in front of the boat name …

A swan came gliding over hoping for some breakfast …

and Simon enjoyed a cuppa …

Back in the 1980’s when we holidayed on the Broads we always took a photo of Simon and Jamie at the mill near Ludham Bridge. As both boys were with us and it’s 25 years since the last photo we decided to take an up-to-date one. It was far more overgrown now and we couldn’t quite set it up as before but we did our best.

Whilst having a coffee and boat-watching we suddenly noticed a cormorant with an eel …

It was amazing to watch as it tried to swallow the eel and it finally succeeded!

It was now time to leave the mooring and go under the bridge …

With Simon at the helm …

we left the River Ant and turned down the River Bure where we saw our first goslings ...

Past St Benet’s Abbey …

and moored at Thurne Mouth …

We watched this lovely River Cruiser …

and then after coffee we left the moorings and went on downriver. Hamish made himself comfortable …

There were several yachts out on the water today …

We reached Acle Bridge passing the Bridge Stores …

and went on down to the moorings just below the Ferry Inn at Stokesby …

There were plenty of swans about …

After lunch we moved on again going back upriver past the Inn …

Simon was enjoying the trip …

and now it was Ozzie’s turn to get comfy …

Jamie was very relaxed on deck …

On reaching the River Thurne …

we turned up it and passed Thurne Dyke …

More yachts …

We were now making for Womack Water passing Hunter’s Yard …

and the shed with the wherries Albion and Maud …

A beautiful thatched cottage …

and then it was a stern-on mooring at the Staithe …

While we had a cuppa we watched the activities and along came three hire yachts from the yard at Upton. The first and second ones motored onto the mooring but the third one came flying in under sail …

It was then a quick manoeuvre to get the sails down and they came in under motor. They all went off for a pint and we left our mooring …

making our way up to Potter Heigham and the free moorings just below the bridge …

A couple of Hunter yachts arrived and moored to lower their masts before quanting under the bridge …

After supper the boys went to the pub for a pint or two!

Picking up Neptune

We were up and away fairly early this morning as we had several things we wanted to do before meeting up with the boys and taking over the boat. First stop was at Tesco to do the shop for the boat and then it was on to Ludham Bridge Staithe where we had to check if it was okay for Simon to leave his car for a couple of nights. It seemed to be fine.

We then went on to Ludham church where I had a list of graves that I wanted to find. One of my Southgate clan had married into the England family who were butchers in Ludham. I had printed off a map and list of graves which I’d found on the Ludham Archive website and it was such a help. We went straight to the right area and there they were all in a row – very helpful! This is Emma Martha Southgate’s grave …

We now headed for Stalham and Richardsons boatyard where we were due to start our holiday. We’d arrived before the boys so Mike got the checking in done in the hopes that the boat would be ready early but unfortunately we’d have to wait until 2pm as it was still being cleaned. The boys turned up and with some time to kill we wandered over to the local Tesco for a few bits which had been forgotten and then we moved the cars over to beside the boat ready for loading. Along came a chap called Alan who we never want to see again!...

Talk about a Jobsworth! We’ve been going to the Broads for about 45-50 years but he insisted on showing us how to tie a clove hitch and made Jamie show him that he could do it!! He then showed us how to use a rhond anchor and by this time I was almost screaming at him! He wasted so much of our time and delayed our start by at least an hour. After the trial run we were allowed to load our gear, the cars were parked in the boatshed and finally we motored out of the marina …

Mike got the flagstaff and flags out and began the job of fixing them to the hatch over our cabin …

After a cuppa we went for a walk to the bridge looking down into the boatyard …

and then watching the fun and games of boats trying to get under the bridge …

When the lady on board took the mop off the roof to fend off with we couldn’t stop laughing and we left them to it. The boys took the dogs for a walk …

and we watched a lovely sunset …

At ten o’clock Mike and I wandered down to meet Simon who had driven up after finishing work.

Norwich Campsite

We’re only on the site for one night as we pick up our boat Broadland Neptune tomorrow lunchtime. We’ve got a nice pitch though …

and very soon we were visited by a little family of ducks …

Mid-afternoon we took Hamish for a stroll to the riverbank which is accessible from the site.

After walking by the river we turned inland and went through some rough woodland …

and past a pond …

Fish and chips for supper tonight – can’t wait!!

Leaving Norfolk

We woke to another lovely morning and by 8am we had emptied the boat of all our stuff.

We just had to return the lifejackets and wait for the chap to come and check how much fuel we'd used - we got a refund of £62 from the £100 deposit everyone has to pay! I went off for a wander around the boatyard as Jamie had texted me the names of a few boats he was interested in hiring next year. I could only find one of them and it looked quite nice but the galley was very small. I'm sure we'll find something though and I think we'll be back in May.

After saying our goodbyes to a few friends we'd made from the Norfolk Broads Forum we headed off to Potter Heigham for breakfast. Since holidaying with the boys it has become a regular thing to end the week with breakfast at the cafe by the bridge. I bought a lovely little book about the history of the Thurne bungalows ...

Apparently the first bungalow was built about 1892 and by the early 1900's there were several houseboats and bungalows along the riverside and all used for family holidays on the Broads. After breks we took a last walk up to the 'railway bridge' and could see that America was still moored. We'll never know if they managed to get her through for the hire booking tomorrow.

So it was back to the RV and the start of the trek to Hampshire, passing over Wroxham bridge for the last time ...

Potter Heigham to Stalham

What a beautiful morning!

The bridge looks fantastic and the sun is just coming up from behind the boatsheds ...

This is the hire yacht America and apparently she is stuck above the bridge. The Pilot who took us through on Tuesday told us it was most embarrassing as they'd got her upstream but couldn't get her back! She's due out on hire on Saturday so they'll be calling in lots of people to sit on her and weigh her down in the hopes that she'll pass under on the next low tide.

The first boat came through and it was oh so close!

The yacht that came through with us is also returning today ...

Hamish is patiently waiting for our turn ...

and then we're through and moored waiting to fill up with water ...

Once filled we said goodbye to Potter Heigham ...

and made our way back down the River Thurne passing chalets of all shapes and sizes ...

We passed a cute little narrow boat called James ...

and then caught up with the yacht we've been seeing quite regularly ...

At least the river wasn't filled with racing yachts today as we passed Thurne Dyke ...

A lovely little dyke with a windmill ...

and a swan flying ahead of us ...

The cows were by the river as we approached St Benet's Abbey ...

We moored here for coffee ...

and who should come along but a chap who'd been on holiday in Portreath during the summer and had stayed in the holiday let right behind us! He's a volunteer for the Broads Authority and we had a good old chinwag about Cornwall and Norfolk. It was such a lovely day that there were several yachts on the water ...

We left the mooring with everything lowered on the boat ready for Ludham Bridge and in no time at all were motoring up the River Ant past all the work that's going on ...

Then the bridge was ahead of us ...

and we were under it and away ...

As it was lovely weather there was no rush to get the windscreen back up so we kept moving until we reached How Hill where we moored for lunch. Hamish was settled ...

and the windmill was looking as good as ever ...

After a sandwich we took Hamish for a walk up to How Hill house and gardens which were looking particularly good today ...

We're just over there on the river ...

Unfortunately Toad Hole Cottage was closed today so we just walked out onto the riverside ...

and made our way back to the boat ...

We moved on upriver ...

into Irstead ...

and then onto Barton Broad ...

We took the route to Barton Turf where Crocus came from ...

and then headed back out to the main river ...

I was watching the undergrowth at the side of the river because on our trip down I'd seen two kingfishers. Suddenly one appeared and I took this photo. He's in the square. Can you see him?

Sadly we were now back at Richardsons yard ...

and found a mooring on Kingfisher Quay ...

Mike got the RV out of store and we began to sort out and pack our stuff. We treated ourselves to a meal at The Swan in Stalham as it was dog-friendly and so now we have one more night onboard and then we're off to Hampshire tomorrow.

Horsey to Potter Heigham

We were awake early again after a night when we'd had some rain and I found my book floating in a pool of water on the shelf beside me! Luckily it wasn't a library book and my phone and watch were elsewhere. We set off at 8.45am heading back down Meadow Dyke and turning right at the end of it.

This took us to Hickling Broad ...

and after passing an anchored yacht which reminded us of home ...

we moored up on the end of the dyke by the Pleasure Boat Inn ...

Behind us we had some houseboats on one side ...

and the Sailing Club on the other ...

with a little sandy beach between us and the Club which was full of geese ...

Naturally the bread came out and I had to feed them ...

As the morning progressed the weather improved and what better setting to have a snooze ...

It was then time to take Hamish for a walk and we passed these lovely cottages in very traditional Norfolk flint ...

returning to the boat for bacon and eggs - yummy!

After lunch we motored off and at one stage we had the company of two black swans ...

It had been very quiet above Potter Heigham as so few boats can get under the bridge but we did see the occasional yacht ...

We were heading for a mooring at Potter again so that we'd be ready for the low tide in the morning and on the way down we saw various boats ...

a lovely wherry weather vane ...

and when we reached our mooring a little steam launch went past ...

There wasn't a lot of room under the bridge this evening but hopefully the tide would be low enough in the morning for us to get back to the other side ...

Potter Heigham to Horsey

We had an alarm set this morning just in case we overslept and missed the low tide but I needn't have worried because I was awake and up by 7.15am which was in plenty of time. Mike went to see the Pilot at 8am and he said everything was fine, we should prepare the boat and he'd take us through the bridge. So the canopy, the flag pole and the windscreen were all lowered, the Pilot came aboard and we held our breath as he took command. Pilots don't hang about! Full throttle and straight through!

He moored us up on the far side as we still hadn't breakfasted and then he took another boat through downriver ...

This was a very similar boat to ours so it was good to watch and see just how much spare room there was - not a lot!

While we sat and ate a yacht was brought through and there wasn't a lot of room for that either ...

It's always entertaining at Potter bridge! After breks we lowered the flags and windscreen again as we still had another bridge to negotiate but this was the road bridge - still called the railway bridge by locals. Many years ago there was a station at Potter Heigham but when the line was shut the railway bridge became a road bridge and this eased the pressure of traffic on the lovely old bridge.

After a brief stop to sort out the boat again we motored on up the River Thurne towards Martham Ferry passing more chalets ...

and finally reaching the ferry where there was evidence of fresh building work ...

We then approached Martham Broad which we hadn't seen since the early 1970's ...

It was quite damp by this time and so we turned around after passing a couple of yachts ...

and moored up for coffee with some sheep for company ...

Retracing our route back downriver we reached Candle Dyke and after passing the Eel Sett ...

we passed a flock of geese on Duck Broad ...

We then turned up Meadow Dyke and made for Horsey Mere where we motored over to see the moorings by the mill ...

and then moored up just outside the Mere ...

We love this spot as the sky turns fantastic colours in the evening ...

and flocks of geese pass over on their way to settle on the water for the night ...
